Built for Founders Who Are Already Moving: Inside the Kuzana Entrepreneurs Program

Built for Founders Who Are Already Moving: Inside the Kuzana Entrepreneurs Program

Posted on July 31, 2026 in Business by Eliza

There is a specific kind of founder that Kuzana was designed for. Not the one with a brilliant idea and a pitch deck. Not the one who is just beginning to test whether their product has a market. The Kuzana entrepreneurs program is built for the founder who has already done the hard early work — who has customers, revenue, and a clear sense of what their business is — and who is ready to move from where they are to something significantly larger.

This distinction matters because it shapes everything about how the programme is structured, what it offers, and what it asks of the people who go through it. A programme designed for idea-stage founders would look completely different from one designed for founders managing businesses with real operational complexity and real growth constraints. Kuzana is unambiguously the latter.

The Problem It Solves

The founders who apply to Kuzana are not struggling to understand their business. They understand it well. What they are struggling with is a specific set of constraints that are limiting their ability to grow — constraints that are common to Kenyan SMEs operating in agri-processing, manufacturing, retail, logistics, and related sectors, and that do not yield simply to good intentions or harder work.

These constraints typically cluster around three areas. The first is capital: not enough working capital to fulfil larger orders, finance inventory, or invest in the equipment and infrastructure that growth requires. The second is operational systems: accounting processes that cannot produce the financial clarity needed for good decision-making; sales processes that are informal and inconsistent; supply chain and logistics systems that work at current scale but will not work at two or three times current scale. The third is strategic clarity: a clear picture of which opportunities to pursue, which to decline, and how to sequence the decisions that will determine the business’s trajectory over the next two to three years.

Addressing all three of these simultaneously — with capital, operational infrastructure, and genuine strategic partnership — is what the Kuzana entrepreneurs program is designed to do.

What the Programme Delivers

The Kuzana entrepreneurs program runs over 12 weeks, with weekly all-day Friday sessions that combine structured learning with practical, hands-on work on each participant’s business. The programme does not offer generic workshops on topics that apply equally to all businesses in all sectors. Each session is oriented toward the specific challenges that participants are navigating in real time — which means the content is live, responsive, and immediately applicable.

Alongside the weekly sessions, each company receives direct operational support that goes well beyond advisory guidance. This includes migrating to a professional accounting system — Zoho is the platform of choice — and cleaning up historical books that may not reflect the true financial position of the business. It includes sales coaching and, crucially, actual support in pursuing real sales conversations with real buyers. It includes export certification support for businesses targeting international markets, and grant writing support for those with access to relevant funding opportunities.

The equity investment — $20,000 at the start of the programme — provides the capital needed to act on the operational improvements being made in real time, rather than waiting for a future funding round that may or may not materialise.

The Community That Forms

One of the dimensions of the Kuzana programme that founders consistently describe as among the most valuable is the community that forms among cohort members. With only seven companies in each batch, the relationships are genuine rather than peripheral. Founders are working through similar challenges, operating in comparable markets, and sharing the specific experience of going through the same programme at the same time.

These relationships outlast the 12 weeks considerably. Founders who have been through Kuzana describe their cohort members as among the most useful professional relationships they have — not because they share the same contacts or expertise as a conventional mentorship network, but because they share the specific, hard-won knowledge of what it takes to build a serious business in Kenya’s economic environment.

The Philosophy Behind It

Kuzana’s founding philosophy is captured in its name: the Swahili concept of growing together. This is not a tagline. It is a genuine operating principle that shapes how the investment is structured, how the support is delivered, and how the relationship between Kuzana and its portfolio companies is intended to evolve over time.

The investment model is designed for permanence rather than exit. Kuzana intends to hold equity positions in its portfolio companies indefinitely — investing in the long-term trajectory of the business rather than positioning for an early sale. This creates a fundamentally different dynamic than the conventional venture capital model, where investor and founder interests often diverge as the business approaches the stage where an exit becomes possible.

For founders who are building businesses they intend to keep and grow for decades, not a few years before a sale, that alignment of long-term interests is not a minor detail. It is one of the most important things an investment partner can offer.
